Can you put borax on carpet?

Hi all, I heard that borax can deep-clean carpets. I am wondering if this is true and if anyone has used borax for this purpose.

A few other questions I have:

Is it safe to put borax on carpet?

Does borax bleach carpets?

How long does borax sit on the carpet?

Do you have any DIY recipes or techniques for making borax carpet cleaner?

Looking forward to your answers.

Thanks in advance

Hi Shoshana, Yes, you can clean carpets with borax. It can be used in a few different ways depending on the need. To clean up specific stains you can sprinkle on a bit of borax and add some water to create a paste. Sprinkle directly from the box or use plastic gloves to apply, as it can be a little caustic to skin. You can let the borax remain on the carpet for any length of time and then vacuum it up to refresh and get odors out. The way I've used it is to mix it in the hot water I use in my carpet shampooer rather than rug shampoo. It helps to clean and odorize the carpet.

  • Yes, you can use borax on carpets and from what I've read, it does not bleach the carpet.

You can sprinkle it on and it will deodorize your carpet.

Another way to use borax on your carpet is:

    • Start by vacuuming the carpet to remove any surface debris.
    • In a separate container, mix ½ cup of borax with 1 gallon of hot water.
    • Fill your steam cleaner with this solution to the fill line, and then begin steam cleaning your carpet.
    • Allow the carpet to dry completely for at least 24 hours before walking on it or replacing any furniture.

Use Borax to help clean up new spills like wine, coffee and juices. Soak up the spill by blotting the area with a clean rag or paper towel. Don't rub as that will push the spill further into the carpet fibers and be more difficult to remove.

    . Blot the spill immediately

    2. Work Borax into the stain

Once you've blotted as much liquid as possible, mist the carpet with cold water and sprinkle some Borax on the spill. Then, cover it with a damp rag. Next, pressing on the rag with the curved of a spoon, work the Borax into the stain.

    . Blot some more

Using a clean cloth, blot the area again, removing the water you sprayed and more of the spilled liquid. Continue to repeat steps 2 and 3 until the blotting rag doesn't show any signs of removing additional spilled liquid.

Hi Shoshana: I've used borax to get smells out of my carpeting. What I did was to sprinkle the borax on the stain or smell, about 6 to 8 inches beyond the area, rub it in with a brush and let it sit for about 10 minutes and then vacuum. I have not had any problems with any bleaching.

It is safe and does not bleach. Blot the spill but don't rub with a clean rag. Mist carpet with cold water and sprinkle Borax on. Cover with a damp rag and use the curve of a spoon to work into the carpet. Then use a clean cloth to blot, removing as much liquid as possible. Repeat until the clean cloth doesn't show any signs of original spill.

I would say this is an urgent solution to a spill vs. a stain.

    Absolutely! Here's a video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SscBN_2Huyw

  • Hey there, Shoshana! Even if you didn't catch the spot right away, spills don't need to cause permanent carpet damage. Borax makes a wonderful spot cleaner for your carpet.

  • Just as an fyi, if you have pets, borax can be toxic to them so it shouldn’t be used.
