I use 20 Mule Team Borax with every wash load. At least 1/4 cup. Keeps whites white, and colors clean and odor free. No chlorine!

Vinegar has been used in laundry dating back to the 1920's. Per my father who died at 90 yrs. of age. It removes odors and is less toxic than bleach. Have no idea why one would put salt with though. I have been doing laundry for 60 yrs. and my lungs are just fine.
