You are correct vinegar IS an acid ( so is orange juice) When you mix 2 chemicals you create a totally new substance- vinegar & salt (sodium chloride) create a chemical reaction that produces hydrochloric acid. (very different than plain vinegar) When you throw in a penny the HCl reacts with the copper to form malachite Pretty color, right?) if you wash it off you have a shiny penny. The use of vinegar also depends on the concentration. a cup of vinegar in a whole wash load is pretty dilute (less than 1%) and will not destroy your clothes. some people drink apple cider vinegar (about 5%). Cathy do you use salad dressing?

I use 20 Mule Team Borax with every wash load. At least 1/4 cup. Keeps whites white, and colors clean and odor free. No chlorine!

Vinegar has been used in laundry dating back to the 1920's. Per my father who died at 90 yrs. of age. It removes odors and is less toxic than bleach. Have no idea why one would put salt with though. I have been doing laundry for 60 yrs. and my lungs are just fine.
