Concrete driveway paint suggestions?

I'm currently contemplating giving my concrete driveway a fresh and vibrant look by applying some paint.

I've been doing some research on concrete driveway paint and I'm excited to dive into this project. However, I would love to hear from those who have already gone down this path.

Additionally, any recommendations for specific brands or types of paint that have proven to be durable and suitable for outdoor concrete surfaces would be greatly appreciated.

  • You will need an epoxy paint. Your local home improvement store should have what you need.

Start with a very clean and de-greased driveway, a leaf blower to remove any debris and then a power wash. Let dry.

Here is a list of driveway paints with pro's and con's of each.

Kilz and Rustoleum both do an excellent job.

This is a great way to hide stains. Concrete can be difficult to clean (especially oil).

Just remember that the better the cleaning job the better the outcome. So take some time and do a good job so the paint you apply has something to hold onto.

Epoxy paint might cost a little more but it is generally worth it.

I would advise for a high traffic area to do a concrete stain rather than paint. I've done paint in a basement and it didn't hold up well after a couple of years, there were serious wear issues. However, the stain held up perfectly.

If you are set on paint, check into garage floor epoxy.

Hi Zach, I have never painted my driveway, but I did a basement floor. Hope this list of best concrete paints helps you out, I used Rustoleum for the basement floor, it went well!

Not sure Paint will stay put or not wear over time? Better to have it overlaid with a resin for a long term finish or maybe Tarmac or Resin & shingle.

Hi Zach: Have you considered staining instead of paint? Paint will peel, where stain goes into the cement and doesn't peel. It's longer lasting and comes in a lot of colours.

It will make it slippery, you will have to paint it every year.

I have had very good results using a Rustoleum epoxy kit in a garage. Though inside is different and doesn't get exposed to constant weather, I'd think it wold work well in a driveway. As others have said, preparation is the key to a successful outcome. Go for it!

Thanks so much for the helpful advice

  • I’d be concerned that paint won’t stick and will make the surface slippery. If you’re in a snowy area, it will wear quick. I’d look into concrete stains as they come in lots of great colors.

First and foremost you need to prep the driveway until it is extreamly clean. Use a power washer with cleaner to get out any stains. I would not use paint. My neighbor used concrete stain. It did fade after a couple of years, but he liked the lighter color.
