How to make plastic outdoor furniture look new?

I am wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on reviving plastic outdoor furniture.

I have had these plastic wicker style chairs for a few years and they are starting to break and get a bit dull from the rain and sun.

I would love to know if any of you have successfully restored outdoor furniture to make it look new.

Would it be possible to paint it with a particular finish to update the appearance? Please also suggest how I could seal the garden furniture for protection from the elements and ensure its longevity outdoors.

I appreciate any advice, suggestions, or personal experiences you can share.

Looking forward to your valuable insights!

  • I would glue the loose pieces with E6000 and spray paint the furniture.

You can clean the plastic wicker using a garden hose and a soft brush and soap such as Dawn. Clean well, let dry, and then repair any areas by regluing using either epoxy or a strong glue for outside use. You CAN paint but know that it will take a lot of paint to get into all the crevices of the wicker. You might instead just clean and then add a few colorful cushions to make the wicker comfortable to sit pn. Protecting the wicker during the off season will help to make it last longer. Throw a drop cloth over the furniture and tie it on with rope or fasten with bungee cords, then clean and enjoy the next season.

Clean off the chair and use a gentle brush to remove any debris. Then re-glue the broken parts, E6000 will work.

Then add some color with thick foam cushions, make sure they are waterproof, if not you can spray on protection, Scotch Guard makes a good product.

Once they become brittle enough to break, you would need to replace the webbing. Going forward, you want to condition regularly and cover when not in use to prolong the life of the material.

I am not a fan of E6000 but that is because it is so very hot here and it melts. I would glue with Loctite and spray with Restoleum in the color of your choice.

Looks as though the chair has has many wet swimsuits sat on it! You would need to soak it and then try to push cane back into place and hop it srinks back in to shape as it dries. Spray paint . If seat doesn't return to shape, add a square of Marine Plywood to the seat top and paint to match chair. Set of Waterproof Patio Cushions would be good too.

Hi Emma: Rustoleum and Krylon make a wonderful spray paint for plastic, in a great variety of colours. Use several thin coats to prevent clogging and running of the paint. The first few coats may not look great, but as each coat dries and you put on the next, it will get better looking as it covers more. Be patient and use several thin coats. As for the garden furniture, you can use spray on varnish. Minwax makes a nice one. You can get it at most home improvement or hardware stores. As for the repairs, you can buy replacement plastic wicker and weave lengths where the broken ones are, going at least 4 inches beyond the tear and then back about 2 or 3 inches on the bottom-side. Then, put a dab of glue on the 2 or 3 inches to secure it. I suggest using Loctite All Plastics Super Glue or a polypropylene type glue. It has 2 P's and the number 5 somewhere on bottle/tube. Here's a site that tells about glues for plastic. A lot depends on the type of plastic: https://www.expertreviews.co.uk/diy-tools/1414237/best-glue-for-plastic

    Good luck

Emma, I’ve done exactly what Betsy explains, on several chairs, for years!

Initially, it may take several cans of paint & some time, but it holds up really well!

Every couple of years, I inspect my wicker chairs, and, if necessary, do slight touch up’s.

I love Rustoleum spray paint for plastics!

Go to amazon.com and type outdoor chair rewebbing kits into the search bar. You will get LOTS of results.

Spray it down with Oxiclean and scrub with a brush.

You can paint these with a spray paint made for plastic, but that is not going to help you with the repairs...sorry.

  • I’d give them a good clean then assess what needs doing. Some strong outdoor glue could handle the loose stray pieces. You could spray paint them but eventually the paint will flake off and/or fade. Maybe drop a slipcover over them or cushions for the seats. If you can, bring them in over winter or cover them with a tarp or outdoor furniture covers.

    Appreciate the advice everyone

  • WD-40 is your best option if you're searching for a quicker, more powerful fix that only requires one ingredient. It polishes your plastic furniture in addition to removing the uneven faded stains on it. Start by removing any dust, grime, or other debris that has amassed on the plastic table or chair over time. You might also just spray away. Spray the plastic furniture with a suitable plastic restorer, like WD-40® Multi-use Product, and then rub it in with a fresh, dry cloth.
